How do you pronounce?

Post  Todd Ellis on Thu Aug 01, 2013 3:00 am

Does anyone know how to pronounce the name "Fimbrethil"? It is from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. I believe it might be Gaelic in origin (not sure though). In the trilogy, Fimbrethil is Treebeard's (Ent) wife. Thank you for your help Very Happy

The languages in LOTR are fictional but it appears Tolkien was influenced by Welsh and other Celtic languages in many of them. Other major influences were Finnish and also Old Norse and Old English.   It is all very clever stuff and the result of major research into comparative philology.

I have never been able to get into the books but may have to try again now.

As regards the pronunciation, there are several recordings of Tolkien reading from his work, so there might just be ones where you can hear his own pronunciation of the names.  There are also several Audiobook recordings and I've been told the BBC one is the best.

OTOH, since it is a made up language, you likely can pronounce it however you like. Who is going to correct you?

If I were trying, it would be pretty much as spelled: Fimbrethil -- Fim (as in dim) - bree (as in the cheese) - thill (as in thrill).

He never did find her, you know.
