This one is finally coming into its own. Ligustrum sinensis.

Scale:

I've worked this one for 3 years now. It started out as an (unsuccessful) full cascade.

Jim, its looking good.
I too use Ligustrum Sinensis, but I'm still lacking in the refining steps Razz
Do you hard prune your mame regularly? What I mean is, I have one mame in progress and the weetree is pushing new growth hard every six months or so, causing the finer structures I have been creating to thicken rapidly.
You ramification looks more refined and thinner, and your leaves looks more juvenile than mature in the first picture.
Do you defoliate or hard prune or use both alternatively?

Thanks all.

Xavier,

As with all of my trees, the little ones have been getting ahead of me this year, but since I can handle them more easily these days they get more attention.  I have to prune regularly.  With the small Ligustrum, especially, I start over with branches every couple of years because, a you say, they get too thick for the size of the tree.

I also try to defoliate all of the broad leafed plants 2-3 times a summer.  (Note:  I have a longer growing season than many of you.) And, whenever I get a leaf that is too large, I pluck it -- especially on my trident maple.

John,

This year, watering has been no problem.  On many days my automatic system has been turned off -- sometimes for as long as 2 weeks.  The major issue has been heavy rains emptying soil from the tiny pots.

I get more or less that same issue where I live,
Adding a layer of moss seems to help in my case.
It keeps the soil in the pot and the moisture as well.
