Japanese Byoubu

It was stated by another member on this forum how to display bonsai in a western style house. Byoubu are a good option. They provide a good backdrop to which you can place your bonsai (shohin). This one I made in Japan under the guidance of my Sensei.

Working on the frames for the larger ones as we speak. 1 Shaku 5 Sun by 2 Shaku. The only Tori no Ko I have right now is Eggshell and a lavender with flower background...Brown or black would have to order from Japan...

(You know this is one of the seven lucky gods...this one just happens to make the money....hence the Japanese reference about good fortune above.)

I would prefer the gold speckling pattern that you have used.

Placing a bonsai (or suiseki_) in front of a screen appropriate for Japanese doll furniture is NOT elegant Japanese style. It telegraphs ignorance of folding screens in traditional display. Of course, in undisciplined display you can do what you wish; it would be no less authentic than depending upon Japanese language rather than appreciation of choice & arrangement in a limited space to engage guests.

In the Gaddou (雅道) form of Bonsai/Suiseki Display Byoubu are commonly used to display with Bonsai and Suiseki....There are many different ways to display (Sendou, Keidou, etc.) Each is one color in the spectrum of the display rainbow, but to say one method or style is Traditional & Disciplined and another is ?Avant Garde? and Undisciplined seems to be your opinion only...BTW Doll furniture Byoubu are usually not made with a real Kamachi, and do not have true Tori no Ko...

I had not seen Kakejikus responce, but had asked arround in Japan....It appears Kakijeku is absolutely right in hes reply. It is also my result.

I think when you said ...'screen appropriate for Japanese doll furniture'  is a bit of an insult? dont you think?  Well no less than the rest of your statement.  Maybe there is something going on that we dont know of?   

I will try and keep out of it,  hihihhihihhihihi         Bring it on!....   a joke I swear!

Obviously you feel very strong about displays being traditional.    We dont all feel like that.........., in fact I think a Tokonoma reminds me too much of a shack,  and not something I would put in my house, well for one thing it wont fit with my  decor, a bit like finding a women  with a Burka in a Catholic Church........ 

Of course when one enters compititions one must fit the profile,  I will give you that,   but at home...., traditional Japanese display does NOT fit  with the  contempory western Interior.  and that my dears is a Fact.

Kakejiku love your Kinpaku Byubu.....  and I, for one, will  slap stones, bonsai, suseki, ikabana, kusimono and a few paraphernalia in front of it, and all my friend will think....wow he's done it again, blooming bastard!!!!

I guess my answer was a little polarizing and I perhaps sounded a little too harsh...Because I do not do the bonsai, I was just placing this piece that I purchased at an antique fair in Hashimoto Japan. I never intended it to be elegant, what I was pointing out was that we should try to explore more. One aspect of display is cultural storytelling, but it is very hard to do without the references involved....For example my wife's parents had an owl in their Toko no Ma, and I did not understand why until she explained the alternative meaning of another set of characters for owl.

I also think that Americans/Europeans/South American bonsai artists should incorporate their own cultural backgrounds into the storytelling...I have some ideas we will do at the upcoming ABS convention in NY...Will send pics later...
