Amateur wiring problem

I bought a ficus benjamina to bonsai. I wired it on July 20 or so. Will the branches go back into place or hold.

It depends upon how long the wire is in place and how much the tree grows. You need enough growth so that the new wood has the shape that you gave the branch with the wire. For rapidly growth trees this can be a few weeks. For slow growing trees this can be a year or more. Some trees (not ficus in my experience) it is several years with several rewirings.

A good rule of thumb is that the best time to take off the wire is a week before it cuts into the bark. Since I do not have a time machine, this is a guessing game where you do apply your best estimate and sometimes have to rewire - ideally with the opposite orientation - clockwise vs. counterclockwise.

I grow a few ficus bonsai in a tropical climate. They grow quickly and strongly but they have a tendency to outgrow their wire fitting very quickly as well as bounce back after wiring. I have to wire branches several times before they retain the shape I want. Then I usually use guy wires to to pull the branches down to the desired level and these are left on longer as they take longer to bite into the growing wood.

I just watch the trees every few days to see when to remove a wire and often only remove a few of the wires at a time from the ares where they seem to be getting a tad tight.

Slow down there Bonsaiteen. It hasn't even been a month yet. I'd check to make sure the wire isn't biting in to the bark, but I doubt it would be time to remove it.

I've always said if you want to learn to wire buy a Ficus. They need to be unwired often and have a poor memory. you can wire four time a year for years to get a good result.
