Anyone have any cool tricks to get Satsuki azalea to back bud on relatively older trunk wood?  I have a Satsuki that I'd estimate the age is around 40-60 years old and I want to try and get some buds to form very low, close to root flare, on the trunk.  At the moment it is back budding like crazy and I am excited but I wonder if any will show up on areas that are as old.  I've tried lightly scrubbing the areas I'm hoping to back bud and I see some of the green phloem (or cambium) after scrubbing.  May this possibly increase the chances for budding in that area since some light may be absorbed by the green phloem (or cambium)?  Of course I will experiment with this but I'm checking for thoughts/ experiences.

The scrubbing is likely to have rubbed OFF any vestigial buds as anything else.

Azalea backbud readily. Perhaps heavy pruning will encourage it.

feed to the max without overloading and allow total unpruned growth all over the tree - the natural habit is to make base shoots and the stronger the tree the more it will make - this may weaken the apex though so be aware of this and manage strong lower growth if the top gets a bit thin
