Nettle Soup!!??

Post  Rick36 on Tue Jul 16, 2013 10:06 am

Just a thought prompted by my wife's latest concoction - nettle fertiliser.
Does anyone/has anyone use/used this for feeding bonsai? I have no idea what the rating is - I imagine high in nitrogen, but it seems to get good results in the garden. For potted plants it may be a bit "iffy" but perhaps useful for fast growers, or succulents?
Cheers. Rick.

Works well. It is also very good against aphids. When I had a veggie-patch, some of the older guys used only the nettle-stink and cow-stink for their plants.

Apparently it is pretty standard for the UK and Europe.  We have nettles of various types over here, but a simple Google search for "nettle fertiliser" (my spell check says I should use "fertilizer") brought up many recipes -- most from the UK.  A quick perusal did not bring up any info on the NPK concentration (and I'd be a bit concerned over the micronutrient availability), but that, of course, would depend on how much water and nettle juice you use in the concoction.  It takes a few weeks of steeping to produce, so that would have to be taken into account also.

Hello Leatherback and Jim. Thank you both for the responses. We have read up on micronutrients and don't think there would be a problem with plants grown in soil or compost containing soil. However, I've started using sharp draining mixtures containing little compost, and that might present a micronutrient problem. Hence I am looking to tap into other growers experience - especially if they have been using Walter's feeding methods.
BTW we are also trying comfrey liquid feed which is supposedly a better NPK balance - whether it contains the micronutrients needed is a mystery (at least to us). Cheers. Rick.

Jim. Over here it's "Lisa with an 's' not Liza with a 'zee'" - but I can be international when required! Cheers. Rick.

It's a very specialised sort of spelling. Wink

On the spelling of names:

My daughter (who is visiting from Florida with granddaughter Jacki, as I write this) is Elisabeth (with an S not a Z) shortened to Lisa.  We'd pronounce Liza as "LyeZa."  Lisa is "Leesah."

(Way back when she was a teenager she (unofficially) changed the spelling of her nickname to Leisa.  For her, it has stuck, but not for me.)

In the 40's or 50's nettle was an ingredient to activate compost heaps, in cold climates.
I think Faber and Faber were the publisher's for Lady x's book on compost.
Was a very good read and then my book disappeared.

Today, my compost if filled with weeds, bamboo and avocado leaves, for a macro/micro nutrient mix. Also had palm leaves, vegetable stuff and anything else I can find.
Later.

So it looks like I'll have to experiment to find out. I'll try a controlled feed programme (program?) next year with some Rowan and Hawthorn seedlings.
Jim - I hope Elisabeth ( I'm playing safe here!) enjoys her visit.
Cheers. Rick.

Rick,

see this article -http://www.lapaixherbfarmproducts.com/stngntlreschjulyhtm.htm

says nettle leaves dried may be -
N - 2.98
P - 0.85
K - 3.8

There is also a Lab test for a solution of 4oz of dried leaves to 2gallons of water.

As I wrote before nettle is also considered to be an activator for making fast compost.

Should make a good compost or compost tea fertiliser.
Later.

Thank you, Khaimraj. I'll use that in addition. We do use nettles in our compost heap, and that serves us well, but there are so many other things which end up there that it would be impossible to know which ones are the prime movers. Also nettle soup comes all but ready to use. Cheers. Rick.
