Pond water for fertilizer? Empty Pond water for fertilizer?

Post  bumblebee Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:39 am

When I clean out my little goldfish pond I save some of the water that has the most "sludge" in it. I then use it on my plants, and it seems to agree with them. But here's my question. Can I use it too much? I mean how much is too much?

If you change the water regularly every week or two it won't hurt and may even help some, but if you don't change the water often enough the buildup of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate which can burn the fish fins will also burn the tree roots. I'd stay away from it for bonsai, with the small pots and root ball, just too much risk.

I have been using a watering can to water from my Koi pond intermittently for years...with very good results. Its only been in the past few weeks that I have setup an actual system...dedicated sump pump with garden hose attached that I just turn on and water the entire garden on a nearly daily basis. The fish are getting daily water changes which they are always happy about and I swear all the plants look better than they ever have this late in the year. I am excited to see what kind of effects this will have over the long run.

I respectfully disagree completely...perhaps this might be an issue in a brand new pond that is heavily over stocked, but never in an established pond...you are far more likely to burn roots using fertilizer so I guess that would be too risky as well???

Bumblebee..use the water, your trees and fish will love it..and you do not have to use the sludge water either...use clear water the nutrients are in solution and there is less chance of clogging your soil with the sludge:)
