So I understand how ramification works with opposite leafs. You cut back to a set of leaves and a bud on each side splits the branch but on a alternate leaf trees how to do get it to fork? If you cut back to one left and one right will buds extend from the right (farthest) or both?

At the base of every leaf is an inactive (axillary) bud. It becomes a new shoot with new leaves, not just a new leaf (usually), when it is released by defoliation or pruning. More than one bud will usually break on each pruned branch(let), so you get ramification regardless of the leaf arrangement. But the branching pattern, nevertheless, always replicates the leaf pattern.

I knew about the inactive bud but I didn't know that more than one would activate with prunning. Thanks for the reply.
