Jaboticaba tree

Does anyone have one of these trees ?? I saw one from a mail order nursery and it looks pretty good.. i know nothing about them so help will be needed..  thanks in advance   john

John, there are loads of previous threads about this tree on the forum.  Just go to the Home page and type jaboticaba into the Google search box and you will get some six pages of them.  Looks like there are plenty that will give you good information.  But I'm thinking your first question should be will it suit your climate.

I'll post a summary of my PM to you on this subject, in case others are interested.

I have a jaboticaba, have had it for almost 3 years now. There is a thread about it: Jaboticaba Thread. My experience is that they are very attractive trees - the new leaves emerge with a reddish tint (stronger in bright light) and the bark peels and flakes producing a nice mottling. They will flower and fruit when mature, though mine is too young to do this.

My tree had been doing well up until this winter, when it went into a decline. Leaves were getting smaller and had a sickly yellowish cast. This has been happening to many of my tropicals so it is probably something cultural and not specific to the jaboticaba. I keep the trees outside during the summer and indoors under high intensity lighting during the winter. I recently defoliated my jaboticaba and put it out in full sun. It is starting to bud out now and I'm hoping it will regain strength during the summer. Time will tell.

One issue I've noted is that the tree seems to be very apically dominant - the growth at the top is very strong and branches there thicken rapidly. It also seems reluctant to bud from the trunk, which is a problem because mine has some important gaps in the branching pattern (see photos in above thread). I finally made a few thread grafts into that area this past winter...the grafts are growing slowly. I will probably have to cut the top back at some point even if the grafts take.

Anyway, that's my story at this point. Let us know if you acquire the jaboticaba and keep us posted about how it does. I'll try to remember to update my thread later this summer.
