Big Old Cotoneaster Empty Big Old Cotoneaster

Post  Lee Brindley Tue Nov 06, 2012 2:43 pm

A friend of mine has recently got into bonsai and particularly liked my little shohin cascade cotoneaster. There are plenty more where I collected that from, so I took him for a look. We found this big, old stump with some dead wood, which I thought was quite a good piece of material. My friend couldn't see any potential in it, so I ended up taking it home myself. What do you guys think - a good piece of material or not?

Not the best virtual, but I see something like this in it...

Lee,

just leave it on the next plane to the West Indies, and I wonn't hurt you [ much ] Smile

Seriously speaking, even though I have a grown fear of decayed wood and the care needed to preserve, I would say go for it. Looks excellent !!

No real experience with cotoneaster [ koh toe knee ahh stir - love that word ] but I did wonder about the soil amount needed to get to your plan?
Thanks for showing, please keep us updated.
Best of growing.

* I grew one in a gallon pot for a year in Florence, Italy ------------ very little experience.

Very nice find.

Be sure to protect the roots from the frost in the winter, it would be a pity to lose it.

But I wouldn't worry too much about the wood decaying, from what I've seen, the wood is very hard.

I think you have a lovely tree but if it is a newly dug tree, do protect it this Winter.
Best,

Great start. I like the direction you have chosen for it.
