chinese quince-how to get to bloom

Post  dick benbow on Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:11 pm

We have our club bonsai auction today. I helped set up yestrday and spied an older looking one. I have two now, one in the pot and one in the ground. Neither blooms. Is it an age thing or can they be encouraged to bloom by what the owner does? could use some input. Smile
thanks

Chinese Quince

All of the trees in the Rosaceae need to reach puberty before they will bloom. That is why they are usually grafted or cutting grown. If your quinces are seedlings, they won't bloom until they are about ten years old. Full sun & high phosphorus fertilizer may help.

thank-you Iris. I did end up getting the tree in the silent auction. A friend of mine kept an eye on the bidding as I
worked the trees in an out of the live auction. he bought it and gifted it to me. nice to have friends, huh?

In another "parrish" I received lots of replies directing me to copies of bonsai today and international bonsai with articles in them.

as a coutesy to others who may wish learn

many nurseries will graft 3 year old chinese quince root stock to older flowering branches. this quickens their ability to age and since the graft is same to same, very difficult to spot the union.

trees need to be pruned back to eliminate longer branches ( about 3 internodes) as flowering comes on thicker branches.

keeping the bonsai on the pot bound side helps as does the use of bone meal during the growing season.
