Azalea question Empty Azalea question

Post  Tom Simonyi Thu May 23, 2013 3:35 pm

Last year I potted up a small azalea that had been grown in the ground for a few years....it did well last season with strong vegetatitve growth. This spring many buds set and began to show color. Several weeks passed by....most remained unopen and the ones that did open soon took on a "wilted lettuce" look. At this point most the buds still remain unopened. There is new leaf growth beginning to take place at this point in time.

Appreciate any input....thanks!

This has been such an unusual spring. All my azalea are discombobulated. I think you have to grin and bear it -- and hope they will give you at least a few flowers.

Thank you, Jim...indeed it has been a very unusual spring...I will be interested in seeing how my satsuki does....it has many buds....most still very tight and a few just starting to show a little color.

I am still wondering what caused misshaped flowers myself. Last year I had some on some plants. Pretty sure it is caused by the environment. Maybe the weather in autumn/late summer.

It is possible for sports to change flower shape as they can change flower colours. But I doubt that's the case.

I don't think it is rain during the beginning of flowering. But that can mess up flowers as well.
