Dawn Redwood Empty Dawn Redwood

Post  dstr Tue May 14, 2013 2:07 am

I have 2 dawn redwods purchased last summer & grown in nursery pots. They grew well & were kept in my garage at a moderate temp during the winter. They went through their deciduous phase as they were supposed to & have grown well as new leaves have grown.
I have found 2 nice size mica pots about 3-4" deep & 12" to 13" in diameter. The trunks of the trees are about 1/2 " .
My question is would it be appropriate to bonsai them now & put them in the new pots since they've started growing?
I would appreciate any observations.
Thanks
David

By this time of the growing season they should be growing fast, I know my metasequoia (dawn redwood) here in the Chicago are. I think you would be taking a chance on a repot this season, as a general rule repotting is normally done before the growing season begins and stresses the plant.

I have a collection of about 6-7 redwoods. Just started collecting last year. In reading on them, you should consider planting in ground to fatten up trunk or waiting till next spring ( just as green shoots appear) to re pot. I live in Buffalo Ny and as I'm sure you know it snows A LOT and can get quite cold. Last year I had a nice redwood in nursery pot that I buried in the ground for the winter, to the top of pot and covered with a little mulch. In spring I took pot out of ground and once weather got a little nicer I planted in ground without pot. It is doing great. They are very hardy trees.

Once you "bonsai" the tree and put it in a training pot, it will not grow as free and fast as in the ground. It's up to you to decide how big or small a tree you want

Hope that helps.
