Unsure when to use cut paste? Empty Unsure when to use cut paste?

Post  Craig Hartley Fri Apr 26, 2013 12:16 pm

I am a little unsure as to when I should use cut paste. If I remove a branch that I wish new shoots / growth to appear do I use the cut paste or do I only use it where I remove a branch that I want to grow over with no new growth?

Unsure when to use cut paste? Empty Cut Paste

Cut paste is usually applied to scars more than 1/2 inch to 1 inch across, 1 to 2 cm. It doesn't make any difference if you are looking for a new shoot. If you want a new shoot at that location, leave a little of the branch collar. That's where the dormant buds are. If you don't want a replacement branch, make a straight flush cut.

Hi Craig,

You can use cut paste any time and buds will push through even a fairly thick layer. I removed all the branches from a mulberry earlier this year and used cut paste on all the wounds, many of the buds are pushing through the paste on the edges of the wounds.

It's my understanding cut paste used to minimize effects of scarring from wounds as well as keeping potential pests/disease away from fresh wounds before they have a chance to harden. If you're working on an area that you don't intend to incorporate into the visible design of the tree, you likely won't have to worry about cut paste, especially if it's a relatively small diameter limb that has been removed. Suppose the type of plant and the time of year might play into the decision to use paste as well.
