Hi i collected a few Hawthorns growing next to the railway tracks about two years ago , they would be twenty plus years old great bark qualities. I cut the tap roots back hard and dropped them in a bucket of superthrive and never looked back. They shoot very nicely from dormant buds around the trunk , cutting back shouldnt be a problem or mayby gin that section of branch they are like a weed hard to kill. And the wood for carving is very tough but they dont heal their wounds very well . Good Luck
