I took this picture of my Utamaro flowering quince this morning. It’s a Japonica, and is called Utamaro because the red of the flowers resembles the famous Japanese print maker’s red. I began it 7 years ago with 8 or 9 cuttings from Brent Walston. A couple cuttings did not survive, but the rest have finally, in the last year, fused together in a very solid mass. This clump doesn’t have any of the tight ramification that some quinces, such as the chojubai red do, but its internodes are relatively short, and no trunk is straight. What ramification there is has been hard won, and is just beginning. This clump is a consistent bloomer.

This tree is lovely, I like the color of the flowers and the bark.

Thank you very much. Quince, if managed, can have great beauty, as well as be a lot of fun.
