Just got this in the post. Potted in a more permanent home and cleaned the bush into the beginning of something.

Any suggestions moving forward?
How should I promote flowering and fruiting?

i also got one earlier this year and just wanted to toss you a wiring caution:
the branches are very brittle seeming, so careful with the bending !

and leave the thorns on...  Twisted Evil

this might help too:

In order to have flowers and fruit on your new pyracantha you have to wait a years growth. They flower from year old buds the following spring. I would advise slightly pruning the out of controlled shoots but leave shoots that you would like to have growth on next year. New growth extends from the thorns as we'll and are a very cool part of the plant as a whole. As for branch structure pyracantha are very brittle with hardened off branches. It is possible to bend new branches and growth easily but take care of older more brittle branches in order not to snap them.

I won't worry about flower and fruit for now.

Concentrate on the structure first. I see long straight branches that need to be either wired now or pruned back more to encourage back budding and natural movement. I grow mine by clip and grow and wire year old branches after. They are prolific growers and bud back like crazy. If this is mine, I'd cut it back. Don't worry about the silhouette yet, build your foundation right...the silhouette will come later.

I'll probably start my own progression thread later for a couple that I collected earlier this year. They were just stumps but are now ball of green mass with lots of branches to choose from. I'll do the thinning and wiring after the leaves fell.

The thorns are not necessary, they back bud at the nodes but as mentioned, the thorns may extend, grow leaves, and turn into branches as well.

Good luck!

is there any chance that your tree is NOT a pyracantha ?

the reason i ask is that, while the trunk/bark look right, i dont see any thorns (maybe you cut them all off) and the leaves look a bit more elongated than mine (but that could just be a photo illusion)... being a novice, i dont know what else it could be, so that was just a thought.

when i gave mine its first styling this spring, i took some cuttings and got them well rooted and they all have flowers now,
but the parent/donor tree doesnt have any... weird.

I think (99% sure) it is a pyracantha.

Thorns usually come after a few nodes of new growth. Regular pinching or trimming will eliminate most thorns.

The ones I collected have 2 inch thorns and lots of berries but because I pinch it constantly...no thorns either. Smile
