I have an Akebono about 4 years old, 13 inches tall, half inch caliper. Zone 5. It has several branches. This year each branch had only one set of leaves. Can I defoliate? I have defoliated maples in July with good results.

hm.. I'd guess (!) that if you only have one set of leaves this year, health is not optimal. Personally, I would not defoliate a tree in less than ideal health. But that is just me Embarassed

On the contrary, I emphasized the tree is in ideal health, just no ramification.

Maybe we can combine these three threads.
Bill said flowering cherries are generally not defoliated because they are only shown in bloom. However, if I had a nice one, I might put it in our fall show.
