Boxwood Repot Today

Decided to repot one of my boxwoods today.  It is a landscape rescue and is about 40-50 years old.  Unfortunately, the person that removed them hacked them up with an ax so there was a lot of damage.  I think that it looks pretty good, considering what it has went through.

Here are the roots all combed out and soil removed.

In its new home.  I am not real happy with the pot, but it is the only one that I had on hand that was big enough so it will have to do for now.

Really like the hollow trunk on it.Nice tree has some real potential i think.

I really like the plant, but I think it was transplanted to the right a bit, looking at the picture.

Lots of potential, but I like the back better for the front. The hollow trunk doesn't look natural to me.

Jim- yeah, you are right, that is not the most flattering view for it and not the front I picked. The hollow is the result of die back. I have had this one for years, I picked it up off the side of the road in my old neighborhood, it was probably planted in the mid-60's. Unfortunately, it was chopped with a machete or something before it was removed for the landscaping and sat on the side of the road for several days, in June. The fact that it is alive today amazes me. My goal this year was to get the roots in a pot, next year, I will work on getting the right front for it.

Daniel - I was under the impression that when planted in a rectangular pot or square pot, that you plant off-center. When I repot next year, I will try it in different positions and see what looks best.

I think whether a tree is centered or planted a bit to one side or another kinda depends on the tree. A totally symmetrical tree might be centered. One with one side wider than another might be planted on the short side of the pot. As it looks right now, I think this tree is pretty symmetrical, so centering may be appropriate. But it depends on what you ultimate design plan is -- and I'm not sure that's show up yet.

I have a couple of smaller boxwoods and I am always amazed at the annual root growth.  It's like spaghetti.

Wow, great buxus u got there - looks like it could use some good ole growing to fill out that canopy. The way the hollow trunk extends to the soil line - very natural looking.

I think Jim is right that it could be centered in the pot--or, since it seems to be leaning slightly to the right in the latest potting, it might be placed slightly to left of center, so that the apex is more-or-less centered. All that can be left to the next potting, and might change as the tree and your plan for it evolves.

It's pretty hard to screw up repotting a boxwood. There is no shortage of roots.
