I have a question. Is Baseball considered an American sport if played in Japan or does it become Japanese Baseball? Very Happy

Interesting question Dorothy, the Japanese do have slightly different rules for baseball, I think. Interesting though is that the Japanese teams are only allowed a set number of foreign players.

Well, "we" invented it, so it is "American," but we've loaned it to various North, South, and Central American, Caribbean, and Austraila-Asian countries and have a few of each of their players in our leagues now, so I guess it "belongs" to whoever wants to play it now.

Great question Dorothy being a Brit I will give my tuppence worth, I think I see where your going with this.

What do you perceive Baseball to be ?

1- Baseball has a set of rules, if these rules are adhered to then no matter where you play Baseball, it will still remain Baseball

2- Is Baseball theoretically the practice of hitting a ball with a bat ?. We have rounders and Cricket which are vaguely the same but on principal remain individual sports. Never the less its a bunch of guys/girls hitting a ball and running around a field.

Hey Dorothy, I suspect you are trying to make an analogy between Japanese-style bonsai and the notion of folks outside of Japan making bonsai in their own style or a regional style.

If that is the case, I think you are comparing apples to oranges. I don't think you can compare a game with RULES to an art form that is defined by artistic principles and not specific rules.

May I ask you a couple of questions???

1. Why didn't the Japanese follow the Chinese penjing model...I think you would agree that there is a vast difference in the style of trees from these two countries.
2. Why don't the Japanese call it penjing instead of Bonsai...
3. I know you love and grow fabulous tropical trees...they don't grow tropical bonsai in Japan...what do you call your tropical trees...are they bonsai to you?
4. I also believe you to be of European decent...so what about Football? Totally different sports right??Smile

The bottom line is it makes no difference who or what you are influenced by in your bonsai endeavors....their is room for all and no need to make everyone fit into the box that is Japanese bonsai.

It will probably take over a hundred years for the various countries to evolve a native style or styles, as a determined few will have to do it, and one man can only do so much.

Ever wonder just how many types of trees can be used for - the practice - and the conditions prevalent in nature????

So as they say, rounders evolved into baseball and board games into virtual worlds,as time passes on.

Happy discussions.

Dorothy, watch the movie Mr. Baseball with Tom Selleck. You'll likely have your answer. Razz
