Ebay : US $998 BIGEI pot
Saw this pot while searching for bonsai pots on ebay.
Apparently is a rare BIGEI pot, price tag is US $998 + free shipping : http://www.ebay.com/itm/160976086136
I'm not considering on buying it, but I'd like some info on what a BIGEI pot is and if its valuable?
I made a quick search but did not get all that much info, apparently Bigei was a woman.
I also made a quick search for the BIGEI seal, its looks alike, but the kanji looks less professional in the ebay pot displayed than those seal examples I've managed to find online. Also looks more masculine than feminine.

Bigei pot
Hello Xavier:
Bigei is the name of the pottery of Mr. Atsumi Hirata-a man. He has stopped making pots about 2-3 years ago. I visited him last in 2009 in Tokoname-unpacking his kiln, the years after that, he was not available, tried to visit every year since. His pots are well known and desirable, and the pot on ebay is larger than his usual pots. Having said that, the price in my estimation is very high, and yes the incised decoration is very fine. kora

Ivonne, go to: www.poterie-du-monde.com/bigei/fr
Yes the website is in French, but the man in the picture, Mr. Atsumi Hirata born in 1939 has been making pots under the name of Bigei,I have been buying pots in Tokoname for the last 15 years and know several of the top potters there, and have made pots there as well, kora

Xavier:You are right, the link seems not to work, but if you google Atsumi Hirata, you will see poterie-du-monde listed, and then you can click on that, and you will see the biography, kora

Re: Ebay : US $998 BIGEI pot
Hello all, I do have something to add, Yvonne. Bigei is a man, no doubt about it. I can also clarify where some of this confusion comes from. A reputable seller(and friend) on eBay that many people in the western world buy pots from has said in the past that bigei was a woman. That's the source of this misinformation(I thought it to be the case myself until I saw pictures of him in Bijutsu Bonkei).
As to the pot, take a look at the sellers other auctions...The bigei with the carvings of the winds is only worth 25,000¥. So at $590$, do the math...
While this is larger than most Bigei pots, it's not especially rare, or unusual to see, Bigei pots of this size. Auction price in Japan: a maximum of 20,000¥, and more likely 10,000¥. Crazy overpriced. A prime example of a seller trying to take advantage of uninformed Western enthusiasts. That's one of the reasons I started my blog: lack of information leads to overpaying, even for decent quality pots, which leads many to believe that Japanese pots are overpriced for the quality. They're not, but a few shady sellers wish it were so.
(and incidentally, if you look at this sellers other auctions, Toen pots are straight up worthless production pots, and not a single pot he has for sale is in any way "Rare")

Perhaps this link will clarify things. The photo is taken from Bijutsu Bonkei, a marvelous two volume encyclopedia of famous bonsai potters, Chinese and Japanese, as well as stands, Suiban, and history.

Further info about this pot: It is shown in the Tokoname F catalog-if you look really carefully, you will see the picture on ebay, with faint chalk written
19 F-15 that corresponds to the picture in the catalog, same size, and was listed as costing 12'500yen- so the asking price for this pot is in my estimation exhorbitant. buyer beware, kora
