WOW! I think I'd air layer this one above the chopped up trunk. Maybe there's a better side, but . . .

I kind of like the carved out trunk, but I've never been a fan of large exposed roots like that. Some love them though. If it were me I would bury it deeper and work on getting fine roots at the surface so I could eventually remove those big roots.

John,

not to fuss. A friend had a 3" [7.5 cm ] trunked Yaupon, and was so afraid to repot it, he ended up killing part of the trunk and then brought it to me with a long face.

I simply sank the tree in a deep pot, and though the trunk died, the upper section just rooted itself and kept on growing/
This was about 8 or so years ago.
Today the base has redeveloped and the trunk, rotted away, so I am back to training the tree.

He came by a few years ago and I gave him a 1"[ 2.5 cm ] thingee and told him to try again.

So you have options, airlayer, bury and see if thread graft or just tying branches from one tree to another will fuse and give you lower branches on the now root section.

I know you can easily do this in late spring.

I just finished repotting the 3 yaupons I have and all came from a Walmart or other out of Louisiana. So I am sure you can find 1 gallon victims to practice on.
All that said I still have two more yaupons to transplant.

Down here they like full sun and freely draining soil, but remember my soil is still at least 1/4 compost by volume.
Stay Well.
Khaimraj

John, this is definitely worth working on. The main thing we try to create in bonsai is the illusion of age, and many times this is done by giving the illusion of a tortured existence through dead branches and such. You have a great tree here with a few notable issues, but a great tree none the less. You have to decide what you want it to be and go from there. I think all of the options given are good possibilities, you just have to decide what the tree will tolerate best (which is something very hard for all of us to see online) and which option you prefer, and then go for it. Whether you air layer, ground layer, sink the roots, trunk chop, or just decide you like it as is and keep developing the top, this is a great piece of material that will soon turn into an interesting bonsai.

Oh, and if you do decide to give up on it, let me know. I'll give you my address and pay postage. Very Happy
