Visiting San Francisco (Suiseki related things to do?)
Hello,
I will be visiting San Fran from Seattle in the beginning of October. Up here in Seattle, there aren't any suiseki-type clubs.
I have been trying to search the internet for the webpage of the San Fran Suiseki Club, but can't find anything. I'm pretty sure there is one. I would like to get ahold of members who might tell me if there are any suiseki/viewing stone related places to visit while I am there. Does anyone here belong to that club, or live in the san fran area?
-Chris

I'd start with Felix Rivera
Have fun, if you ever get farther down the coast San Diego, I'll take you to the desert to find stones

Hi CC... Please let us know if you make a connection in San Francisco-- Rock & Mark both offered good advice re' contacts. In Washington State, collectors Rick & Mimi Stiles were noted as collectors associated with a new suiseki group connected to Puget Sound Bonsai Association in the April 2009 edition of California Aiseki Kai newsletter (editions posted on the Aiseki Kai website.

Hi CC... This is a little askew of stone aesthetics though modestly related to culture affecting our perception of stones.
If I were visiting SF soon, I'd consider heading to the Asian Art Museum of SF to see their exhibition "Lord of the Samurai." It has caused some commotion in the arts community because of a website parody. The Museum's exhibition promotes the daimyo culture's "Brilliant Warriors/Artistic Masters" while glossing over less appealing aspects that might educate the public in regard to the warrior model. The Museum has a very good website promoting their exhibit
http://www.asianart.org/Samurai.htm.
An alternative website spoofs the exhibition with the provocative title, "Lord It’s the Samurai: Myth, Militarism & Man-Boy Love" http://www.asiansart.org/samurai1.html.
Another website poses questions to spokesperson for the spoof site that might inspire or enrage http://www.8asians.com/2009/08/28/8-questions-for-asians-arts-museum/#disqus_thread.

Hi CuriousComputer... The California Aiseki Kai Newsletter has again published an article by Rick & Mimi Stiles-- this one focusing on collecting in Washington state (September issue, p. 8_). They name a additional stone collectors in the regional stone association & illustrate collected stones.
There are a number of articles in the newsletter worth a close read. The Yasuo Mitsuya article (p. 1 & continuing) is sure to draw attention, while several articles (L&N Ragle, J. Greaves, P. Bloomer) attend to issues many enthusiast encounter. Ralph Bischof ("outsider" desert collecting) & Claude Joseph (Kauai (Island), HW exhibit) add special-interest material. Illustrations of stones from the Aiseki Kai meeting have added interest due to specific comments in the articles.
