Hi all,

I've had a Brazilian Rain Tree and a Brush Cherry now for a few months. The rain tree lost all of it's leaves at the start of the winter, but refoliated almost completely about a month ago. Since then it's been looking very lackluster. The leaves don't look droopy as much as they do dried out. I'm losing whole clusters that just dry out and fall off (sometimes without yellowing) portions of the tree look healthy, but I was wondering if I may have let patches of the soil dry out from watering unevenly? Should I try giving it a good watering by immersion?

The brush cherry is having similar issues. It was doing wonderful, and now (despite paying attention to watering habits) seems to have all of its foliage drying out and losing spunk. Maybe there hasn't been enough light?

I can post pictures if necessary!

Thanks for the help in advance.

These are tropical trees, you are keeping them indoors in a heated house.
Please provide the following:
How are you watering, how often, etc.
Where are the trees, what is the light situation.
Picturess of the trees in their usual location will help.
BUT, neither of these trees is good for beginner and indoors.

Also, where did you get the trees? Some places that sell "beginner bonsai" glue rocks to the top of the soil so they stay in the pot for shipping and also look pretty. But you will never get enough water through that, so you have to remove them if that has been done. Sometimes the soil in these plants isn't very good, but it's not advisable to try repotting when the trees are weak. You need to try to get them growing strongly first.

Another possibility is keeping them TOO wet, especially if they aren't receiving enough light. Low light tends to make trees go dormant, and if they are dormant with constantly wet roots they can start to rot.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is try to find a good local bonsai club and ask them for help. It's really hard to tell what's going on from descriptions, and even from pictures. Somebody who knows bonsai, even if they don't know the particular species, should be able to take a good look at them and help you out.

Good luck!

We don't usually see Bush Cherry and Brazilian Rain Tree as Mallsai. I suspect they came from a nursery in South Florida.

The trees both came from a very nice nursery in Ringoes, NJ. I picked them up locally; they were not shipped. I think they just were suffering from inattentiveness due to my rough recovery from getting my wisdom teeth out. I watered them really well by immersion, and now I'm just paying closer attention to their watering/lighting schedule. They seem to be getting stronger, but the Brush cherry is still dry and losing leaves though. Thanks for letting me pick your brains!

Even if you bought them from a local nursery, they were probably grown in South Florida, I can't see a NJ nursery growing these from cuttings themselves.
