The Kracken Update
I did some maintenance work on my getting large Indian Laurel Ficus, Ficus Microcarpa kinmen, called "The Kracken."
Here it is showing bushy growth.
And here it is after some work and wire.
I put the full story on my blog (too much work to reproduce here.)

Thanks Jerry - Not so quick though as it has been 5 years. When its near finished and shown in the defoliated state it should resemble the Kracken getting ready to find dinner.

Hi Pabling,
I didn't start the cutting so I don't know for sure but I believe it was one cutting that made some aerial roots that fattened up. It was probably 5 or 6 years old by the time I got it.

Re: Kracken update
Hi Rob,
Looking good! I saw your blog pictures too. Are you going to put a couple of eyes on it???? Just kidding! LOL!
Have you ever tried scoring the trunk of a Ficus with a knife to get more character? If any one has let me know. I have a small Microcarpa that needs some character to the base.

Rob, really beautiful work. I like both the balance and the movement of this tree, and your extreme taper for the branches is something worth working toward. Thanks for posting it!

Don't score the trunk. I tried that 15 years ago on a tree and it still hasn't recovered.
Try sphagnum moss around the area. The tree will throw roots and other nodules in the area that could add interest.

thanks Chris. Min Lo and the other Ficus trees in Taiwan inspired me to try this style.
BTW, taper is a key element in bonsai design that doesn't get the importance it deserves. Many new-bees try to rush things and the lack of taper really reveals their attempt.
