I like where you are going with this design. This is just my thought... I think the design would improve a lot if you lean the trunk a little to the right and slightly move the apex a little to the left. This way the tree will look more balanced.

I like it a lot otherwise.

this would be too much work too close together in my mind.

what with the major restyle and wiring and massive loss of foliage etc it will give the tree a very weak year or more recovering.....and in the picture it looked quite pale and yellowish so may not of been that well fed in the previous seasons to prepare it for the work already done (it may have been the photo colour though). Following all this the last thing i would do the following spring would be to disturb the roots and repot it. If the repot was overdue leading to the pale colour maybe the work should have been done the other way round ? - roots, recover, style.....

no point rushing it either, even more so as it has a US pedigree - (there is at least 6+ years of foliage growing anyway to get a nice tree image now it is going down the compact route), so I would not repot in spring but instead feed really well for 1 or 2 more seasons and generate plenty of buds & foliage .

(i could originally see a truely great slanting bunjin from that lovely trunk - but the bits needed for that are jin /bin now Laughing !)

have fun with it tho

Marcus

marcus the first picture is right before it was styled and i had just bought it maybe three weeks before that from someone getting out of bonsai so you are right the tree wasn't properly care for till i got it. after styling and heavily feeding the tree the green came back and good growth thats one reason i feel it should be ready to be repotted but have no plan on removing alot of root just replacing 1/2 the growing medium

It was done at a workshop with Michele Andolfo. I'm almost done with a three year design study with him

I think the pot complements the tree beautifully. Keep us posted as you develop this one.

Yeah, I suppose even when they don't do what you want them to, right? Sort of like parenting.
