The first styling of a European Larch

I received this tree from Matija Triglav my Slovenian friend a mountain dweller! Matija had the tree for a year and I kept it a further year before repotting and styling.



Some may say the trunk is ugly and had too many thin and fat parts. This larch has endured the worst of weather and environments; I am sure it has been hit by the odd avalanche and crushed under many meters of snow.

The bulbous growth is a result of callusing and ‘recallusing’ caused as the tree was under constant attack from the elements.

I wanted to create a compact tree that reflected that struggle for survival, so the canopy is cradled in the bosom of the trunk.

I look forward to the canopy developing and the ramification improving, I prefer Larch as a winter image so the styling must be perfect.

wow! what a beautiful tree Mr Tickle. It is majestic, dragon like and I feel you should name it. According to wikepidea "In Slovenia, a dragon is called zmaj" so perhaps your beautiful larch could be named "The larch Zmaj". I love the tree.

Hello mr. Tickle,

I see you have compacted the top part of the tree - nice improvement-...as you know larches are better styled slightly more "over the top", because of the lush foliage that makes the the apperiance of the tree much more real when in leaf. (but they look awesome nude too)
Matija must have taken very good care of this one...as it is one great piece.

If i may, the first left branch from the top down is barely visible in this "autumn/winter picture"- it's in the same line as the trunk and deadwood...but let's see how this one looks in early spring. ---I bet it's going to bring smile on our faces---

Oi Gašper!! I was first to give it a name . Any cobras up in the mountain where this tree came from Would be a privilege to me to be first to suggest a name for a yamadori that is world class and award winning in future. Just kidding too Gašper

You are right, no cobras around here but those dragons, huh,...i once broke my hunting spear and had to run for my life

The tree definitely deserves a name and the fact that it was named by popular acclaim gives it far more credence than if it had been named by the owner. The fact remains that this tree is spectacularly beautiful--- and powerful at the same time. It gives new meaning to the phrase: Knocked over by a feather.
