I want a Larch

I have been wanting a Larch bonsai, But I live in Louisiana and do not know if they will survive here.Can anyone answer that for me? And if they will survive here, Does anyone have any for sale?

I got one over the summer here in Atlanta in a bulk buy from a guy getting out. I'd like to know how they do here as well. This one is healthy and over-grown. When can I work it, I relly like this tree.

I want one too, and spruce. But I'm sure as hell not moving anywhere close to where there's enough winter to make them happy. You can try them, but it will languish for a few years then crap out. Not much fun watching that.

no larch would not survive in Louisiana. over the summer i was selling a larch i had on eBay and the winning bid was a guy that lived right outside of Atlanta and i ended up having to talk him out of the purchase as the tree would die down there he understood and thanked me for being honest

damn, i thought i finally could trade my larix kaempferi or sell it to any of you guys... but 2 problems, you would have to come to belgium (or move to belgium? ), and your climate is too hot so it seems.

What is the hardness of Louisiana?

That is a nice kaempferi. Mine are a long way from that stage..

it's not so much the heat (but that is a factor) but it is more the lack of freezing winter. my larches usually don't see winter storage there on the benches all year around

I want a larch, too!
Not European larch as it is more zone envy but I have been advised to look for larix kaempferi which perhaps could withstand higher temps.

I second that. They love sun and heat (in this case they only need more frequent watering), but lack of freezing temps is what gets them - they slowly die in a few years because of exhaustion.

I have heard stories (hear-say) of people in the tropics storing their temperates in a fridge/freezer for the winter. Might be worth experimenting?

In fact, you should ask this question to my wife! She would probably kick me out from home, unless it is edible ahahhhhaaaha

So, for me, it does not worth at the expense of becoming a homeless
However, you are a wife, you can try of course. Noone can kick you out!!!

well in essence that is what you need to do but you need to slowly take it out of dormancy and on the opposite end you need to slowly put it in dormancy. but after all said and done you gotta ask yourself is it worth it cause the cost factor and all the hoops you gotta go threw to make it work. i tried a tropical actually a neea tree i bought from pedro morales when i was in puerto rico and after one year of wintering a tropical i sold it it just wasn't worth it from that point on if it doesn't grow where i am i don't grow it

I would hate to put my larch in a fridge for the winter , as thats the best part of having a larch. Enjoying trees without leaves is what i like best.

every now and then it's nice to wake up in zone 3a.
that said, it's time to bundle up and head out into the -20C day to shovel the overnight snow accumulation of 15cm --- burying my temperates just a little deeper in its insulating goodness.

Louisiana is in zone 8.. But in the summer is the problem..

The colder climates do have their benefits (i.e. larch). However, I'd really like to be able to grow one of those giant water jasmines that we see from Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, etc.
