I kinda hijacked another thread with the springtime shot of my split-trunk Pyrus pyrafolia, which had only a few springtime leaves in March. Here it is with a whole head of leaves. The leaves tend to whorl around a point, which make the tree look a bit unruly.

My guess is that if it were large than its current 13 inches it would look less mussed.

If it doesn't lose too many leaves from black spot -- an every-fall occurrence -- I'll post a fall color shot some time in late November.

That's a lovely little tree. Reminds me of the hollow beeches I see when I'm out and about in the local woods.

It is a bit unruly with a full crop of leaves, but I don't mind that at all, it adds to the charm.

That would be nice too, but could we get a close up of the hollows? Please?
The pot looks slightly too deep, is that a nesessity with that species or is there another reason?I love the way the cambium folds over the deadwood, lovely tree!

The hollow is mostly optical illusion. I used a Minwax Wood Finish Stain Marker to darken the wood inside the split area of the main trunk. There IS a hollow there, but it's only 1/8 " or a bit more deep.

Here are a couple of pictures of the split on the main trunk and one of the split on the smaller trunk. This smaller one has twisted over the years, so the split sides no longer face each other.

I may put this in a shallower pot some day, but I tend to err on the side of tree health rather than bonsai style trends and go with deeper pots -- especially with the intense summer heat we get here in the US southeast. This tree is wilted and droopy every summer afternoon.

Very nice!
Yes, I have the same problem, summer sun and warm vinds makes a too shallow a pot dry out completely in very short time, deeper pots and a layer of sphagnum moss on top takes care of it in the hottest days.
