Use of fly strips for pests
I was wondering if anyone had used no pest strips (the kind you hang up for flies) to treat bonsai. I was told by a greenhouse worker that putting a houseplant in a large garbage bag with a fly strip for 24 hours will kill all the insects without hurting the plant. I was wondering if anyone had tried this and if it worked.

That sounds ridiculous as all the bugs would have to be attracted to it and go to it. I don't think the eggs are going to run over there.

That is what I thought and said it is the fumes from the insect strip which kills the pests. The bugs don't actually go to the strip. They are used in barns etc. They are not like fly paper. They were marketed as Shell No-pest Strips.

The only fly strips I've seen are yellow and ARE sticky on both sides. Many insects seem to be attracted to the yellow (there may be an odor, too???). They work for flies, and seemed to work for white fly one year when I had them badly down in Tallahassee. The big problem is handling them. They stick to anything. Disposal can be an issue since you can't get them off your fingers. <g>

The U.S. Forest Service has used the "Shell No-Pest Strip" pesticide to kill gypsy moths. I don't see why it wouldn't work on insects on a tree in a closed environment like a trash can...

The strips contain Dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate. More commonly known as DDVP or Vapona. It's the same stuff that was used in flea collars.

Same here, rockm.....but the type I have is called: Hot Shot No Pest Strip . I just googled the product ,which has worked for me for several years, and it does carry several warnings. I have it in my small workshop with my tropicals and there is no odor . It is housed in a plastic sleeve with openings so you don't have to touch the insecticide.
I also use Safer Sticky Whitefly traps for small window bonsai. These yellow traps ARE difficult to handle but I've used chopsticks to hold them saving my fingers because both sides of the strips are coated. These really work and I imagine are similar to the fly strips but are only for flying pests.

David D, what kind of pests are you having issues with?
Here in Fl my ficus are constantly under siege by thrips. I've used both the blue and yellow sticky traps for various pests and they've worked well. They of course don't attract eggs but they attract adults which breaks the reproductive cycle. I've purchased them from a local hydroponics store. Here's an example. Depending on the number of trees you have, these strips/pads may not be efficient. A lot of us here simply use systemic, which is the sledgehammer approach.
