Surely somebody can at least tell whether it is Chinese or Japanese?

Hey Lee,
It's not so easy as all that. Chinese chops and Japanese Seals use much of the same characters, so unless the mark is clearly "Chinese style" or "Japanese style" there isn't much telling. This style of mark is the hardest to pin down, as both use this style of lettering, it's standard. That being said, it's upside down, and a picture of the whole pot would maybe help.
