Yeap I know tree in a pot ,

but lets go deeper into this,....

I once read: ' holding a bonsai is like holding the world in your hands'

, so why do so many people pick stumps etc that cant be held up by 2 people without hosts etc?

Is thsi still bonsai? looks like a tree in a pot to me? probally feels like you have the whole world in your hands too when holding some of them but.............

is it true to the spirit of bonsai ?

p.s.
Yeah i know im expecting a lot of responce from this post Very Happy

Please see the sections 'Bonsai Definition' and 'Bonsai Meaning' of my article "What is Bonsai?" http://www.bonsaiempire.com/what-is-bonsai for some recent thoughts I've had on your question.

Rhubarb,

I would imagine that the early Chinese just collected what they liked and kept them in pots. I more or less just left it at that.

I like the mame' and smaller size, but I learnt it as 3 inches and under,as well as up to 15 inch tall plants, because you could carry that size of pot by yourself. One does get older and extra hands may not always be around.

Plus you have to view at 3 times the greatest distance [ diagonal, height, width of tree ] to see the plant in one look, when working on the design. Old oil painting rule.
I don't always have that much space to work in.

Also making pots for 15 inch tall or wide trees, doesn't require too much technical know how or huge kilns. I do like to make pots every once in a while.

I guess some folk just like bigger trees.

I can move some my trees one handed using a dolly. Does that count?

It's ok if he has a dolly, he's just a sensitive guy...

does the dolly have eyes that move ? and real hair ? I hope it doesn't blow up haha

Bonsai is many things to many people - bad ones are bad whether they are small or huge - great ones the same. Thank goodness everyone has different tastes and the various stages fit the individual perfectly as they develop skills, ability and personal taste. Variety is the spice of life afterall

yes some great stuff on that link but let me post a couple of horrors:

from japan too !

maybe too much

It's a tree in a pot so is it bonsai? my verdict "no it isn't" we don't know how big these trees will eventally grow so they could be a minautre atm but what is the cut off line from bonsai to normal tree?

You are right it isn't, but it is not a question of how grown/big/old these trees would grow, but how grown/big/old are these trees in human eyes and our own perception of how trees should look like when we compare them to our selves.... it think....you know it's always about texture of the bark, size of leaves, the little shade they give, the proportions of figurines we could put under their canopy...we image how real it would look like....

....you could stand under that oak, but would not give you the feel of a bonsai tree, as it is too large although it is in the pot...until it is small enough so a human mind can understand it is smaller than normal.

What is Bonsai ------------ an attempt to recapture the memories of trees/shrubs, landscape and nature from when we first became aware of ourselves.
