Shrunk & warped Chinese _shizuo_/"stone seat"
Here is a large Chinese seat that has shrunk & warped even with the wood under the socket being ~ 3/4" thick. Its previous owner tried to refit the stone with additional carving, unsuccessfully. It appears the seat's sides were once lacquered red, but the lacquer was removed & a clear finish applied. The bottom and inside the socket are wood-stained without finish. The outside has finish, so the end-grain has been largely protected from checking.

Hi Chris
What a pity about the seat....does it normaly hold a stone, or is it standing alone.
Kind regards Yvonne
