Uk talent final went well ! Capel Manor
Hi everyone,
Last Sunday (14th) was the final of the 2012 Fobbs talent contest, held at Capel Manor in conjuction with the annual Enfield Club Autumn Bonsai Show.
I made the final as best runner up from my heat at the Welsh nation bonsai event earlier in the year - and to be honest after the heat I was kicking myself a bit as I didn't create the tree I wanted to....it needed the guy wire i added at home and more green bits
Here is a link to the heat on the Fobbs site Fobbs talent heats
The material was really good - shiMpaku junipers, very even and fair, fantastic compact growth and plenty of branches - they were about 16-18" tall i guess, same sort of width. Rules are: 3 hours - extra time if all competitors request it at the end, winner to represent the UK at the European Bonsai event, held this year in France over the Easter weekend.
Pictures are better than words so here is my day
At this stage i must say thanks to Tony Tickle for loaning us both the excelent bonsai stands - brilliant bits of kit - thanks
And my tree was the winner
Here is is fresh from the event
And 3 days later I slipped it into a lovely Erin pot (the roots were already shallow and compact so this was just a gentle comb out and tie it into the new pot, working in some akadama and kiryu). Then a quick paint with lime sulphur and a few tweaks to branches that had been dislodged (no more wire added - every branch was done in the competition). I added one little strip of extra shari and that was it, all done
And a bonsai is born - remembering this is just 3 and a bit hours into a long road ahead
I am really looking forward to the final, representing my country, meeting new friends and having a bonsai adventure over the easter 2013 weekend.
A USA talent comp must be in the pipeline ??? state heats and national finals..................
thanks everyone,
Marcus

Great result for you Marcus...
Nice relaxed atmosphere chatting to Mikey During the pressure of 'finding the tree'!!??
Nice composition by the way. Those Junipers are quite different to the ones in the Heats.
As above... Any pics of Mikey's Tree!?
Regards

Me too ! , but it wasnt me taking pictures, (these have come from 2 different cameras)............ i was otherwise occupied . When comp finished we all had to leave the room for judging etc. There are official pics of both trees - hopefully mickeys will appear on fobbs site or here and i can paste it in to the thread. Same as show trees, I know Mark has brilliant pictures of the exhibition. Any other pics please add them guys & girls
Thanks everyone, and yes the trees for the final were top class, special thanks to Malcom as the finished result would not have been possible if the material trees were not so good -it is the right way to do it tho - a more difficult tree in the heats and a tree with lots of potential for the final.
Hi Bri - yes m8, Mikey and I had a really good 3 hours - really nice guy and it was a really relaxed friendly day, hope to catch up with him again some day
