Well, they are, but I have a question. I've been looking at this trying to figure out how to ask this and not sound pissy, because that's not my intent. So here goes...

These were dug 8 or 9 years ago, right? If these were mine (I wish!) I would have spent some of those years letting the new branches grow so they'd be in porportion with those fat trunks. Grow out, cut back, wire, repeat. Ramification is like icing on the cake - the LAST thing to do after an appropriate branch structure is in place. So now that you're working on ramification there's no wild, unchecked growth for fattening up, right? Will the branches, especially the lowest ones, EVER be in porportion with the trunk?

To me it seems like a step got skipped, or am I missing something?
Hi Russel,
I am a newbie...so please be patient with me.
I have one more bougainvillea growing in the garden that is at an inappropriate place, which I planed to turn into bonsai.
I am not sure if I understood your comment well.
Are you saying that it is better to let the bouganvilea grow in the ground and try to shape the branches before digging it out so they thicken?
I'd that correct and can it be applied to other trees too?

I've split this from a previous thread so it can get answers in its own right without redirecting the original thread. Maybe someone could help our new member here.

Thanks Fiona,
Did not think of starting another thread, since I wanted to quote his statement.
But I think it is better what You did, and hope to get some advise on the subject...
I have tried to read all the topics on bonsai...and learn...I get more questions than understanding...it still very hard for me...You people know a lot.
Can I post some more questions here or should I start a new thread for each question? Please advise.
