Cambium grafting
I don't have any pictures...YET...but has anyone experimented with partial removal of cambium and bark instead of the old "concave cut and fill with paste?
I figure if the bark is left intact at one end, peal it back from the part of the tree to be removed and then fold it back into place, glue and wrap and allow to heal should work on some of the larger "amputations".
Anyone experiment with this that might have photos?
Thanks,
forbey

Re: Cambium grafting
We had a huge discussion of this on page 6 about "Bark Grafting". Frankly I'm pretty sure the consensus was negative because the idea behind grafting is to put cambium layer against cambium layer. Bark could be glued back on ... but anyway if you have the time to read the thread ,you'll find the replies go off topic many times but it's sorta "interesting"

Thanks, Norma:
I will read the thread, but I wasn't talking about grafting bark to bark. I was talking about cutting the majority of the heartwood out to hollow out the area and then folding the deadwood-backed cambium and bark back in place, gluing heartwood to heartwood and allowing the cut lines to heal back together instead of leaving a large hole.
If I get a chance to "sparmint" I'll have to make a photo journal of the process.

Re: Cambium grafting
Hi Jay,
The process you describe will work on many trees, but it requires surgical accuracy in aligning the cambium layers. Read the Grafters Handbook by R.J. Garner for almost all you could ever want on grafting.

Re: Cambium grafting
Outstanding, I'll add the book to my reading list, BEFORE I begin my surgical experimentation.
