Pictures from the Bonsai Society of Brevard (County, Florida) held as part of the Melbourne (Florida) Art Festival over the weekend of October 6 and 7, 2012. We set up a booth and show our trees, we also raffle a tree and sell a few starter trees to help recover the cost of the show. Our main purpose is 1. show our trees and enjoy the fact that people appreciate them, 2. recruit new members of our club, 3. increase public awareness of Bonsai.

The tree at the entrance to our exhibit is a large Ficus salisicaria

We also raffled a large Pink Pixie Bougainvillea.

There were two Demos each day; this is Rob Kempinski, a club member and Past BCI President doing a demo.

Afraid so, we drew the winning ticket yesterday, but the winner sold it to one of our members.

Yes, it was hot. This is a downtown street with asphalt, which is bad enough, but combined with all the white booths reflecting the sun, it was hot. Rob was working hard on that tree.

Ficus salisicaria grow very well for us and make very nice larger bonsai, in addition to the one in front here are two more

Another nice and interesting tropical is the Brazilian Raintree.

Thanks Billy,

strangely enough, as far as I know the supply of that particular ficus has dried up in our nurseries.
Odd isn't it?

They are easy and quick from cuttings. Maybe it isn't worth it to nurseries to grow something so easy for everyone.

or

Where the ones you had imported? A change in government regulations might explain that.

Also a very nice Brazilian Raintree. I have not seen too many well developed ones, which is a shame, because they are pretty easy in bonsai culture. Seems hard to find them of any size.
Thanks for the pics!

I agree and wonder why. They propagate easily from seeds and heard/read they can be airlayered easily too.

Have you seen these?

Both are developed in less than 10 years! Shocked

Thanks, had not seen those. I'm sure in the climates that mimic their natural environment, there is more year round growth. I'm sure that's why some of the trees in this post are such monsters!(meaning big...) Very Happy

A raintree group planting with blooms and seed pods. The seed pods are not really visible since they are still green and blend into the foliage.
