I made the mistake of buying a small bonsai plant last year, and eventually, it ended up dying. Since then, I've wanted to start another one by getting a bush, and pruning it. I would like some tips for starting a new one---getting tips in the following areas would be very helpful:

-How to pick out a good plant to transform into a bonsai
-How early to transplant the plant into a true bonsai pot, and how early to start wiring
-Water and fertilization tips
-Good species to start with (indoor)
-General guidelines for choosing which branches should go, which ones should stay, etc.

I've done quite a bit of research already, but I'm still unsure how to approach bonsai making. Feel free to answer any/all questions, in addition to other topics that have not been mentioned here.

Gosh...that would fill a book, of which there are many good, introductory examples.
Brent Walston has some good articles on his website...e.g. http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/nurserys.htm

Where in the USA are you? USA has a hundred different climates. We can't give you advice until we know where you live.
Please understand that indoor bonsai really should be outdoors all summer, except perhaps in Montana.

You need more than "tips." You will find an article for beginners and a couple of threads discussing bonsai books. Pay particular attention to the "Beginner's" book thread. www.evergreengardenworks.com has lots of good info, but I'd recommend a basic book, first -- perhaps The Complete Book of Bonsai by Harry Tomlinson, or the Simon and Schuster Guide to Bonsai.

You will find a listing of bonsai clubs at www.absbonsai.org. Find one near you and join.
