What kind of ficus?
How often did you pinch? Maybe you should let it extend a few leaves before trimming, it works for me.
Have you tried defoliating it?

Did you totally defoliate? (Too late now.) Prune don't pinch, but not till spring.

John,

What worked for me is to let it grow until it stops/rests and just before the next growth spurt comes (buds swelling & sheaths turning red again), I trim it back. That encourages a lot of back budding on mine.

Good luck!

Since you indicated that you obtained your ficus from Walmart, it's possibly a 'ginseng ficus'. If it is, in my experience they don't back bud terribly well. As Mr. Rhodes advised, it would be wise to wait until spring to do anything with the plant. In my experience, once new buds start to swell in spring ('when' depends on what zone you're in) you can both defoliate and trim some roots. The combination of pushing new roots and shoots may induce some back budding. And although it's common knowledge (or a wive's tale?) that fertilizing shouldn't be done after repotting, I fertilize my tropicals immediately after, since that is one of the times they need nutrients the most, if you think about it.
