Hi memet. Your picture is really too small for us to see well and subsequently comment on. Could you maybe post a bigger image please. HERE is the link to the image posting tutorial.

My problem is that this is a vine and not a tree. Ivy has been used but.

Yes, he posted the link for the thumbnail image instead of the full sized image.

Smart that you started with a larger trunk.. they don't ever seem to thicken once in a pot. It's ramifying nicely too, and I think Ivy can make fine Bonsai. I don't have a way to tell how big it is.. are the leaves a dwarf version? Great so far!

Thank you.
Trunk is 3cm width and 20 cm height. Now its in 5 lt pot, and yes its leaves dwarf.

I think what Billy means is that Hedera is not a tree but a woody climbing plant and will therefore have different growth considerations. Not the least of this is that most climbers need something to "climb" so getting a trunk diameter that will allow them to be self-supporting can be tricky. Yours, however, seems to have already got that so I think in your case you should be able to make a decent wee tree out of it. I also think you are right to go for one of smaller sizes of bonsai. A simple search through google images yields many ivy bonsai, a lot of which are poor but several of which are decent. The smaller sized ones were among the best.

Good luck. I'd be interested to see how your tree develops over time so please put some pics up in the future.

I have had English ivy bonsai before that stood up by themselves, but they died. I think I know why. I just started a cascade of H. h. 'Duck Foot' because I have a beautiful mini cascade pot that was crying. 'Duck Foot' is a prize-winning dwarf cultivar. According to the American Ivy Society, this and many of the dwarf cultivars are very hardy and need to be kept cool over the winter. My tropical plant room is much too warm. I will try wintering it in the sun porch this year. If it ever looks like anything I will post a picture.
An exception to this rule is 'Iberia,' a very tiny miniature that has done well with Neea buxifolia. 'Spetchley' is temperamental, but also seems to tolerate warm winters.
