time for more galleries please
come on guys and girls
1000's of users
100's of regular contributers
14 galleries??????????
time to pull your fingers out dont you think? - if you have the time to create a post count of many 100's, or even 1000+ then you have time to give a little back to IBC and show us some trees - start the chant - Gallerieeee.....Gallerieeeeeeee......Gallerieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
No need to be shy, gallery is your own space - no unhelpfull comments etc lets see some members trees - beginer, intermeadiate, or even pro..........in fact when you think about some obvious names are gallery-less ? do we need to ask each individual by name??
pics please, they make the ibc what it is
regards Marcus

Re: time for more galleries please
Other people's galleries would be very nice, especially as lots of members wanted this option when we did the revamp. It doesn't need to be your entire collection - why not pick your best two or three trees and put them on? The beauty is you can add to your gallery as and when other trees come through your development process.
Best way to do it is start your thread, then put each tree you want to show into a separate post. That way you can go back and edit in new photos of the same tree. I'll be doing that this autumn when I get some good fall colour pics of my Ginkgo and Maple. I'll just edit the new photos into the post of the tree in question.

Re: time for more galleries please
Marcus,
you do realise that those galleries have a direct link into Google, and anything you post here goes worldwide, and the image cannot be protected.
Perhaps, that is why there are so few posts. Not everyone wants stardom.
[ I have zero interest in becoming an Internet Star and have no ambitions to sell or teach for $$$$ ]
Over on the Fine Art side, we do have Chinese knock off companies stealing images of paintings and producing them as the work of dead masters [to get away from legalities], and they are also presently offering them as Paint by Number kits.
For my part, all I grow are simple shapes ----- and as one member stated a few weeks ago --- Simple is boring.
Everyone seems to want hi-drama, even if it does not fit the species.
Until.

Re: time for more galleries please
Every image posted on IBC, not just those in the Galleries section, can be located through google or other searches, and indeed this issues with lifting images has been discussed a couple of times on other threads. If people are unscrupulous enough they will "steal" your pictures, even if they appear in print format rather than online - I have seen obviously scanned in images on several other forums. That's the risk we take when we post. And it's not just on here; if you don't set your securities correctly, google search will find images from your Flickr site, your blog/website, anything.
But Khaimraj is right in saying that not everyone wants their trees in a gallery and we most certainly are not intending that people should feel forced to do so. But it remains the case that first, significantly more than 14 people said they wanted this feature when we did the consultation at the beginning of the year, and second, in the old version of the Gallery about 75 people had contributed at least one image - indeed it was because so many people contributed that it very quickly reached its capacity and we had to either abandon a gallery altogether, get folk who wanted it to pay for it under the previous version, or come up with the current alternative.
And remember, if you have a worry about image being lifted from on here, your Gallery can simply link to a similar area on your blog or website.

Good lord Khaimraj, aren't there bigger things to worry about than what people can see - and lift - from google? It's just a picture, not your mom. Someone's using one of my pictures posted on the banana forum to sell on ebay... I guess I could pitch a fit about it but what's the point?

Russell,
I more or less stated all of that for the others. I am not sure how many will note that the free sites are often fingers of the paying sites.
My real problem with on-line images is the flatness of the image. We have the same problem on the Fine Art sites, so most of us just look at compositions and how well a figure is drawn, trying to look past the one eye situation. The colour/tone is usually so far off, that it is a waste.
All that said, the same applies to Bonsai trees done in 3d.Take a look at my entry under the Aralia,I made sure that shrub was volumetric, and it is flat and ugly in the image.Says little for my efforts!
Now please don't go off mad at me,I value your Internet friendship.
Later.

Hell, if I waited around until I could take a GOOD picture, I'd never show ANYTHING!! If anyone should have a gallery it's YOU!
And Khaimraj, I'm just giving you the business. I do know what you mean about the 2-d images. It amazes how much is lost. When I see something really nice here my first though is how much more awesome it must be in person.

Briliant, thanks Ian - you were one of the scalps i wanted - also a great link direct to your blog:D
Jun my friend - save the Bull****.....we see pictures of the wind blowing through your trees, kites, little houses, great material in development, water, waves, cliffs and rock faces. those pictures look better than ok so stop being shy and start a gallery..............
Dario - you talk it up and are building a small nursery there.......so time for pictures - you will be proud of them too, so take a day off from buying trees at wallmart or where-ever and take some pictures - each pic becomes the progrression too, so it is an invaluble archive of your bonsai path - i wish i had my early tree pictures..............i really do
Khaimraj - you are regularly taking part in an internet forum - an open place for all and anybody to contribute, read, write and look......you like to write here and anyone could take your words of wisdom, so it is a poor excuse to not add a gallery - pictures and words are basically equal online. I like your words.....it would be nice to see the trees you want to share with us too.
I can think of 10 more names very easily...............you log on virtually every day...........pics please or i dont think i need to be shy asking by name.
come on............give a bit back to the site and the readers/watchers
cheers for now

Maybe if some more people would actually take a look! 300 visitors for my gallery in a month, my last post here got over 1200 in just two days!

I think the no reply/comment rule (which serves a purpose) is backfiring and possibly causing this problem. Out of sight out of mind...and only posts bumps threads up.Hans van Meer. wrote:Maybe if some more people would actually take a look! 300 visitors for my gallery in a month, ...
Jun/Marcus, I promise that when I finally have something worthwhile (at least in my mind), I will start my own gallery (it might take a while though).

Well it is not so much: that I am posting just for the publicity or some thing like that! It just takes me a lot of time to post and to write something to go along with it! Some forget that this is all in a language that is not my own and that I am still a "no brainer" when it comes to working on a PC! That's why it took so long to find the pics to go along with my gallery, they were all over the place. That's what I meant : that although I did it gladly, it was a lot of work and this were just a few of the trees that I am planing to post! And that for just over 300 visitors! My last post about one of my trees took me half a hour and got more than 1200 visitors! And dont get me wrong, I will gladly upload more of my work on to my gallery, but it would be nice to know that people were actually visiting out of interest in my work. I think that not being able to discuss or ask about the work that is shown is the problem here! If people have seen your tree for the third time, they have seen it enough in most cases! But if there is more info to come and a discussion going on, they will come back over and over again! Just a observation and maybe something to think about?
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.

Re: time for more galleries please
Hello,
Perhaps after starting a gallery or after an addition if not already done, a gallery discusion thread started in the bonsai discussion forum to discuss the gallery would be a good idea. After that, everytime an addition is made onto the gallery the initial thread on the bonsai discussion forum could be updated with a simple reply to the last post and discussion can then take place there regarding the gallery contents added or existing. So, for example, on Jun's excellent gallery a thread entitled "Jun's gallery discussion" on the bonsai discussion forum would be appropriate. Just an idea.
Cheers,
Adam

Re: time for more galleries please
The point of a gallery was so that people could post pictures of their trees without comment. Otherwise it is not a gallery but merely an extension of the Discussion forum. The old gallery that we had worked in exactly the same way so it is not as if we have done anything different.
I don't think it is right to consider the small number of galleries as a "problem"; it was always going to be a small forum and members should most certainly not feel pressured into putting up a gallery.
If people are interested in more info on a particular tree, I'm sure the owner would be delighted to get a PM from them.

Hi fiona
May I ask you if the gallery is only for finished trees or can we post our trees that are currently under progress?
What is the criteria for that?

We routinely zap 'ataboy' messages posted to a gallery for just that reason. ANYONE who wants his or her tree discussed is free to post it to the Discussion Forum or the Progressions forum. That's where you go to collect "ataboys" (or oopses). (And a lot of the Gallery trees have appeared in one or the other of those Forums.)
Think of pictures in the Gallery as the trees in the old Bonsai Today Galleries. You look at them, and sometimes you drool over them. But there's no way to comment.
I suppose there is nothing to prevent a member from starting a discussion thread about some other member's trees posted in the gallery, but you may not make friends that way. Private Messages are the way to go.

There ARE no criteria. For anything. Post what you like or are proud of.
But why post yet-to-be bonsai there? That's what the Discussion or Questions forums are for. Why post a picture of something that's not finished?
