It is that time of the year again, just earlier than last year. We only had winter for a cool week......... thumbs up

I have not yet decided what will be the front, the large twig on top will be a Jin, but is needed for it's growing power (sap flow).

I decided to change the front and put it in a 'Peter Krebs pot'

Because I didn't grow this tree in baskets it has a very shallow root system, and is developing a nice wide Nebari

After, it has a remarkable Nebari for such a small tree

This will do for now, the tree that are ready to come out of their baskets will be repotted next.......

Thanks for sharing arihato. Nice developing trees. Larches are my favorite trees.

I understand that some of the trees are being cultivated in pond baskets. But that specific larch has not been into a basket but has been growing into an ordinary bonsai pot? Is this correct? And the difference between these two growing methods is the shallow rootball and the wide nebari?

Thank you in advance.

Alexandra, almost all my ShoHin Larches were grown in pond baskets, utilising large/long sacrificial branches.

This one is ready for refinement, the trunk is there now I will be growing the canopy over the next few years. And grow a more smooth taper.
This method of growing trees is what I would call 'speed growing', it has some advantages but also some drawbacks.

The tree in question was grown in small pots all its life. Very much slower, much finer root development, BUT no massive trunk. Trees grown this way have a totally different feel to them than either field grown or basket grown.

Thanks for your ready response, arihato!
I have one little L. Kaempferi growing in a basket and into a growing "bed" together with some other small trees since last summer.... Well, it's not exactly a bed but a growing wooden box/chest (I live in an apartment you see...) filled with free draining soil mixture. And yes you're right, all the trees are already showing better growth.
