My avatar is the first flattop bunjin pine I designed. Much to my amazement, it was selected to be in a major bonsai exhibit in 2008 and won the Yoshimura Award for being the "Finest Classical Bonsai".
The pine in this post is a different variety and has a much larger base than my avatar pine. I did a lot of carving to reduce it somewhat, but it will never be classical bunjin. Bunjin is one of my favorite styles. The other is "sumo", the opposite of bunjin.
Another surprise from this pine. The needles have reduced to less than half their original length since it started bonsai training.
