Japanese Red Pine and Trident Maple 1 yr old

Post  Apache2010 on Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:11 pm

Hello,

Miracluously I managed to grow a Japanese Red Pine and Trident Maple from seed. They are currently 1 year old.

They are growing well and roots are coming through the bottom of the pot, however, I was wondering what to do with them over winter. (in the UK)

Should I replant them before winter into a bigger pot?
Should I plant them outside over winter?
Should I leave them be?

I know this is probably a basic/stupid question but i'm very new to all this.

Thanks very much

It would help you know where in the UK you are. They are hardy trees here in the SE, but they will need more insulation to their roots over winter. I would plant them complete with pot in the ground, or complete with pot in a larger pot, so you disturb their roots at this young age. Or keep them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

Thanks for getting back to me. I live near Birmingham btw.

I think i'll keep them as they are, move them to an unheated greenhouse, then repot them in the spring into a large pot.

Apache,
Your seedlings will be fine of they are allowed to grow in their current pots for another two or three years. Disturbing the roots of such young plants is unnecessary and risky. IOnce they are older they will be better able to tolerate root disturbance.

Thanks,

I was going to repot because of the roots coming out the bottom, but if they are fine as they are for a couple if years then i'll leave them be.
