Extremely big Yew Empty Extremely big Yew

Post  Guest Tue Jul 28, 2009 10:12 pm

Collected this massive Yew about 4 years ago. original tree was 20 ft. Took me 5 hours to dig it out and it then spent 2 yrs in a large box to recover. Initial carving was created with a chainsaw to remove bulk, then i used a Makita and Dremmel for the finer work. Still not happy with the carving yet but moving it near a source of power on my own is difficult .The mere thought gives me a hernia!

I know there is a movement to taking bonsai back to the 'smaller tree', but you gotta love them chunkers!

5 hours well spent, I'd say.

Did you not think of putting it on a wheeled trolley?

Sorry, I was still thinking about the 'hawthorn' thread. I was trying to say that you may be pleasantly suprised at the price of good hawthorn material.

Alternatively, you could always seek out a suitable specimen growing near you. After asking permission to remove it, of course.

Aye. there's a wetland near me where I walk my dog. it's plumb in the middle of an urban area, but you can see Herons, Buzzards, Hawks, grouse, pheasants and allsorts. It's groovy. There's a few big old Hawthorns and a few oaks that are prime kit, but I dunno how to get permission from as I don't know who owns the land.

A quick phone call to your local council would be a good starting point. If it's public land, it's a safe bet that they have their grubby little fingers in it somewhere.

The pot its in is second hand. Its cheap mass produced Chinese and cost me a tenner. When i eventually pluck up the courage to move it to a suitable place to work on it [ brief spell in hospital included], i would love to see it in an English pot. Unfortunately my kiln is no where near big enough,so i will be parting with some serious dosh in the near future. The Yew came from Forrestry Commision land by the way!

Hi Will, for sure this is a but lump...nice work so far on creating interest in the deadwood.

Big trees such as yours are great fun but it comes at a cost... pots... tables and bad backs. Tell me one bonsai artist who's body is not screwed due to carrying big trees.

Lee... show us your scar again mate Suspect

Hi T ony. I myself have a hernia.Waiting for hospital appointment at the moment.[how we suffer for our art!] With hindsight i should have left it where it was but my bonsai goggles got the better of me.It has been fun though and people on seeing it are gobsmacked.
Hi Fionnghal. The internal pot measurements are 22" by 18" or 560mm by 460mm, and thats all nebari!

A) Tony does NOT have a Hernia cheers coz he concentrates on SMALL trees and only has ONE big Escallonia.

B) What's this Comparethemeerkat.com? take a look

well, I was born with a hernia, so that makes me a natural born bonsai dude. Many years of martial arts training should have given me an extremely robust set of core muscles, but it's my herniated wallet that causes me problems, so if anybody wants someone to help with manual labour in exchange for a nice chunky hawthorn or two, my servies are at your disposal Smile
