I read with much interest your answer to my topic, I know each of you have different sensitivenesses about display, but in any case we all have the taste for elegance.
So I will show you three displays for two doban, can you tell me please your preferences even if you like better rectangular or oval doban? Many thanks in advance.

I think in all of your displays I would like to see more space in front of the stone, between the stone and the viewer.

Hi Marco, Yvonne, Billy & Peterbrod...

The two (rectangular & oval) doban illustrated are much longer than necessary & both are too narrow for good display of this stone. While extra length can be accommodated to elaborate empty space horizontally, I agree strongly with Billy that a more appropriate doban would be deeper with more empty space revealed in front of the stone; a shorter & deeper oval doban could accomplish this using area most effectively.

A lengthy doban suggesting extreme empty space should be nearly filled with sand as opposed to a relatively shorter doban which suggest a more formal display & has a wider inner band distinguishing the top of the sand from inner upper rim of the doban. The exposed insides of the illustrated doban are too broad along their back side.

The stone is not a particularly good choice as set in this doban. Since the foot on the right-side is not turning under the stone, the foot on the left side should not be turning-under the stone. This could be cured by more careful placement to balance the entry of the stone-into-sand (probably both "near vertical" as a better choice than both "turning under") on each side of the stone.

Peter offers placement of a single-peak mountain stone by placing the peak 1/3 from one end of the daiza, but such calculation is not the typical choice for arrangement. For example, Peter's guidance would create an odd arrangement if the stone had a longer foot on one side...

Yvonne's choices, which I imagine based on balancing empty spaces in the doban relative to modest strength of visual movement in the stone, are arguably the best choice of those Marco respectfully offers. I would have chosen the oval doban before the rectangular doban, too.

Well, I see you are totally interested by my joke, now I will show you somme stones on doban from a Japanese book which surely Chris you have in your library. I can add still a thing, the display on doban is a bit different from a suiban because the deep of doban is much smaller than suiban and wide is much larger. Look below and after give me your preference for each doban please.

Hi Marco... Some doban are long & narrow, others are deep (front-to-back) relative to their length, & each has the same expectation as other suiban in stone placement. The narrow bottom of doban often allow deeper burying of stones in trays with low walls than ceramic suiban. Those you displayed were too narrow for the stone illustrated, as Billy noted.

Not every Japanese placement is in accord with modern expectation, and guidance differs among stone groups. Modern traditional display arrangements (from Nippon Suiseki Association, Hamamatsu group et al.) will have much in common. Still, every Meihin exhibition offers surprising arrangement. Some leave even the most practiced enthusiasts grunting. I recall a particularly unexpected suiban arrangement chosen for the Meihinten exhibition poster in 2004. Could the owner have been an exceptional client or the 'suiseki with suiban' have had an exceptional history? Not every choice is artistic.

If you have anything to share about the Meihinten stone arrangements in suiban or of the 4 stones you've added for discussion, I hope you will discuss them. I doubt that IBC members who are serious about suiseki practice wish to be lured into games or traps.

To me is it a joy to go back and see the photos of the exhibition stones....The rest may not be uninteresting, but in this tread is it pure highjacking, and the joke should be transfered to a topic of its own.

Kind regards yvonne

I apologize for all troubles I gave you with my images, if you need I will delete them since you like better, and I agree too, to comment Meihinten exhibit.
Chris, I know, we learnt Matsuura displays, and other Japanese people have different sensitivenesses.
Sorry for trouble again,
best wishes,

No trouble, Marco. Obviously, the sub-thread on "stone arrangement in a doban" has generated interest, but is somewhat separate from the Meihinten exhibition. Yvonne's suggestion of splitting it seems ideal, & I'll attempt it. I hope stone enthusiasts will continue consideration of both threads for comment.
