Post  Guest Wed Aug 15, 2012 5:17 am

Hi IBC.

I am seeing some pictures of my trees in other sites,, Just today I am browsing the net. and I saw several pictures of my trees in "motion topic beta" site. This site seems to be a business oriented site earning money from ads and other form of income thru the net...

How can I protect my pictures from this form of stealing...Most of it came from IBC. Some from facebook.
Is it normal, and just be accepted as such?

regards,
jun Mad

hi Jun,

i believe using facebook automatically gives permission for your pictures to be seen and used by others - you need to go into your settings and change the prefferences so only friends can see the pictures - or just dont put your trees on FB - the security is too poor so why advertise your best trees?.

I saw several of my pictures appear on google images after they were entered into the ryuga tool contest but they clearly said thery would use the pictures for marketing, so that was ok.

To be honest though once you upload a photo image to the web you have lost it - anyone can save a copy and then it is everywhere. You can pay to embed a code in the images that stops their re-use, or other codes contact you if people download them I believe. Watermarking the pictures also puts people off re-use and actual printing of the pics, but again you need to buy the software i believe

Our words are the same - anyone could copy them, claim them as their own etc - an article I wrote online appeared in a magazine with another authors name on it before now !! It is the web though - so once you upload words and pictures that is it really.......people that dont want to have work stolen don't put it online I guess

Also Jun all your IBC pictures are not actually on any part of a private server at all........they are hosted by a commercial site www.servimg.com

just go to the home page and log in - all the pictures are there - i just looked and have 33 pages of images there, but it is free storage so I'm happy

I agree with you Marcus. The only "a bit" protection is water mark [it has to be over most part of the picture]

Hi Jun.

The guys are right and it is very difficult to "protect" any image that gets it way on to the internet anywhere.

Re the Servimg issue - the second post on the Uploading images tutorial outlines this (HERE ) so that users are aware that in effect they are posting to a system that works in the same way as photobucket, flickr etc. However, others should not be able to access the servimg account of a member through clicking on a picture on here.

It's really annoying but the watermarking is the only real solutions. It doesn't stop someone pressing Save image as but it at least means if they then use that image the rest of the world can see the pic has been lifted without permission. Trouble is, if we did that on here, then pics would appear with the mark on them too.

Thanks Fiona,

...I just got to change my mindset now. That's the thing I could do, I guess. I just hope people would have some courtesy of naming the owner of the tree or images they use specially for business purposes.
I am seeing now some of Roberts Stevens works and some other folks with "copyright image application" in watermarks. It is really doesn't look too good but I guess they feel in a way abused too.

jun

Well, unless you were planning to use THAT picture in a printed publication, I can't see that it really matters. If you ever do write something for other-than-internet publishing, you'll probably take a new pic at that time, anyway. Just don't put it up on the web at that time.

The world changes rapidly; most people don't change that fast. The internet makes things change faster every day, and some people take advantage of it.

Besides, you could look at it as a compliment, I suppose.

I don't think International Copyright Law (relatively toothless at the best of times, as China endlessly proves) has kept up with how the Internet is changing things. I'm sure people are working on it, but they may never catch up.

Good to know that there are problems you encounter I will never get. LOL Twisted Evil

Honestly, that is a bummer but as mentioned, you can look at it as a compliment since it is hard to discourage others from "stealing" pics online. You can also write them and ask if they can either delete the picture or give you proper credit for it.

Good luck!

Jun,

I told you about that situation almost 3 years ago or so [ after a few months when we met on the IBC ] At that time you said you didn;t care.
Why should it bother you now ?

The free serve machine is linked to Google, and this is easily observed, especially if you look up a specific word that you as an individual use.

If you are planning to do a book, please save your best images on disk, and away from your computer.
Best to you.

I am happy for anyone to repost images of mine even if I do not get a credit if they are used as reference or for learning... What does get my goat is folk making money from my name or my images. www.yamadori.com has my name in the key words. It also uses images made at the Noelanders trophy, but it is a pure advert driven site, the 'bonsai' information on the site is quite frankly a joke.

i think if we are all honest we put our pictures online for the pleasure of others and ourselves, we also enjoy talking about how and what we did to form the tree.............its no good coming back later saying "oi - he's pinched my picture"....as once given you have to say goodbye.

Also Tony when you put a tree in a public exhibition 1000 or more people can take a picture on their phone or camera and blog it, facebook it, do whatever with it really,....... plus the trees go in a book the whole world can buy ! so its no good worrying that someone is making a pound or two off a picture. Many people use a show like Noelanders to try and add value to their trees, their sales area or their prowess as a commercial stylist so its no good having a go at a picture pincher is it?

we either give freely or dont give at all, there is no middle ground

Marcus do not confuse somebody photographing my tree with somebody using my images, photos made for or by me. Come in my garden take any photo you want. But do not use a photo that I have paid a professional photographer to take and put it on a calendar that you will sell and make money for you.

Is it fair that so many of Walters photos are used by 'bonsai seed' sellers on eBay?

By your admission you would condone someone visiting Kimuras garden, snapping away and then producing a book of his trees without his permission.

Noelanders photos go in a book with the agreement of the exhibitors and is sold by the organising club and the photographs are done by a professional photographer... You are happy to scan them and post them here? You should read the IBC AUP Give freely get real!

Tony's right. Your photographs are your copyright, but nobody has yet managed to copyright a bonsai.

If you ask the offending site to remove your copyright pictures, they should oblige but they don't alwaysm and when they don't there's not an awful lot you can do without major expense.

I remember that. but during those days my photos were just providing link to IBC. Unless you have seen some pictures then that was used in commercial purposes...That I do not see before. but now I found several photos for ads purposes only, and not link to IBC.
Still now, I won't mind if the photos were just link to IBC.
I even saw one of my pictures used for promoting massage services...Maybe it promotes erotic sense. scratch

Still no plan of making any book, Maybe only my mother will buy it if I made one...hehehe. Maybe you can advance order one too, I'll make 3 copies for the three of us. Razz ...Limited edition.

Compliment? I'll try to absorb that logic Dario...But people are making money out of my pictures. hehehe. they should at least send some fertilizer to keep "their" trees under my care in good conditions. Razz otherwise, they should not blame in the future if the trees I'll post is not well kept. Razz
