It is 103 degrees F on my porch beside my trees at 5:30 p.m. Ground-level Ozone is very high and I'm under orders to stay inside, so my trees are on their own, but from the window they look OK. There are a couple more days of this ahead. My waterer comes on 4 times in a 24-hour period, but I'm sure the pots are hot.

Wow, I think the high here today was only 96. Seems like that's what I saw on my phone while on the patio wiring a boxwood and working on my tan. Thank God for sea breezes, they make a giant difference here. Inland Alabama suffers far more than we do.

Hmm, maybe those northern winters don't seem so bad now? Very Happy 80 deg, clear skies, low humidity, refreshing breeze up here.

Seriously, take care in that heat down there...

Thats about where I was Tues-Thurs - 106-103... doesn't matter at that point what you do if your roots are too hot to absorb...

My large crabapple was planted on a milk crate with landscaping weed barrier to hold the Turface in. It worked and the tree is lush now but as summer came the tree just hybernated. The pot, having holes all around transpires water so fast that I cannot keep up with watering wise so I had to repot last week. The new pot (bussing tub) is lined with styrofoam boards on the sides and this weekend, the tree just pushed out a lot of new growth on all its terminal buds!!! cheers thumbs up

Just survived 3-4 days of 100+ here in VA, and a 60-70 mile an hour wind storm two days ago that left a lot of people without power and a lot of downed trees (only lost a small sacrifice branch on one of my grow out hornbeams that was hit with a falling oak limb. I got lucky, the neighbors fence took a 10 foot maple limb. I just wish it would rain for more than five minutes and cool us down, its sad when you are excited the forecast is in the 90's and not higher lol.

I had 108 on Sat and 103 on Fri here in middle Georgia. But we had 0.60 rain last night and the temps this morning were 69. My trees look ok but I am watering 2x/day and misting them to cool them down a couple of times. My ficus love it but maples not so much.

108!! Wow, and I thought 103 was bad. My maples too are not a happy bunch, but they are hanging in there, and my ficus is also loving this which I am loving as I have spent the last month working on developing some new aerial roots and directing their decent. At least the heat is good for something.

YOU all have my sympathy.
From the tropics [ Caribbean ] where I am not sure we have reached 100 deg.f or even held that temperature for more than an hour, if ever we did.
Later.

I just went around last week and gave many of the "sensitives" a good mulching of Long strand sphagnum on top of their pots.

Maples, Beech, Birch, Hornbeam, even the Bougey and Wisteria have all thanked me. I do believe it helps cool the root zone and retain moisture.

Noticeable difference..well recommended.

Hmmm I wonder if putting in an oversized pot stuffed with sphag would be workable and allow me to keep canopies in higher levels of sun light- I have far too much to cover with towels/rags which then need to be removed to water...

Mostly the maples seem to be suffering at the moment.

We've had record breaking heat here in Chicago too, 103F yesterday. Supp. to get 102 today. When I looked at all my plants, they are doing ok, incl. the maples. But the pots and substrate was hot as heck, so I put alum foil or white foamy shelf liner around the pots. It's helped keep the roots much cooler.

This just made me laugh;

I went out to check the digital thermometer I have on one of the benches on my deck and the LCD screens are black! cheers

I think the Temp not only exceeded the measuring threshold of the device it also exceeded the functional threshold of the device.

.....So I brought the Maples in...

I finally decided to mulch or moss all my pots and grow out boxes, as the heat just keeps on coming, seems to have helped a great deal. We lost the tall oak behind our yard that gave me partial afternoon shade to the recent storm so now I am going to rig up a shade screen over my maples and hornbeams. Just hoping next weeks weather forecast of cooler weather becomes a reality.

102* currently, supposed to top out at 104. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be 106*. Not sure what the "heat index will be. We haven't had any significant rain in weeks. Thinking of building a shaded top for the trees. They will get indirect light, just not cooking light.

I'm on the scoot, after a 45 minute ride home I'm prety wilted meself!

Hottest day of the year so far here, 95 deg in the shade. Most of my trees have been in a location receiving afternoon shade (after 2 pm) for a couple of weeks and seem pretty happy. The plants in the yard are not so lucky...no shade and no meaningful rain for about 3 weeks now. Everything is parched.

They say you can fry an egg on the sidewalk if the pavement gets to 158*F. Shocked

I wonder how many eggs you can fry on a black leather motorcycle sitting on the same pavement ... Twisted Evil

I don't want to leave work until after the sun goes down! Crying or Very sad
