Fungicidal treatment regimes and suggestions?

Post  Steven on Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:56 pm

While my older tress seem virtually unaffected by anything this season, I am growing out several types of japanese, korean, field, and standard red maples that are all between 2-5 years old which I have had various issues with leaf fungus of various types from what I have read and would like to know what preventative treatments anyone is using and when throughout the year to help reduce these issues?

I am sure some of the issues were brought on by the cold damp spells we had this spring coupled with the aphid swarm that hit our neighborhood and the treatment to get rid of those, all other environmental/location factors aside I would love some suggestions on a preventative. Thanks in advance

I'll tell you. The BEST preventative I know of for dealing with leaf fungus on all sorts of things is not to water the foliage. Rain is Rain and that can't be helped but in general I keep my hand watering (which happens much more often than rainfall) off things like Maples, Apples, Cherries, Pomegranate, even new growth on Chinese elm. Once you start in with the fungal treatments you need to be consistent in keeping up with the re-aplications and thats a pain. Thus I try very hard to keep leaves dry with good air circulation. It takes experience to know what trees you can foliage soak and which are best left with dry leaves.

Additionally if you have any variegated maples, the white and pink variegations on young leaves will turn brown and mushy if they get wet.

Thanks, I generally avoid watering the foliage, but as mentioned above in my battle against the aphids this spring it could not be avoided between soap sprays and just a good hosing to blast the hordes of green monsters away. Most of my trees I treat regularly with neem oil which has done well for me for some time, I try to avoid using it on my maples and now that I am keeping and cultivating beneficial bugs in my garden I try not to use it at all.
