Two Modest Stones
A couple of my stones.
(Front)
(Back, with small notch broken out of left side lip of base. A little natural desert varnish towards the bottom of the stone.)
From the Panamint Mountain Range in Death Valley, collected by Elsie Andrade of the Phoenix club. The area is no longer open to collectors. Stone is 3-1/4"W x 1-7/8"H x 2"D (8.3cmW x 4.76cmH x 5.1cmD). Base, now showing some shrinkage, was made by me with Bondo® in 1990 per http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/Display/SuisekiDais.html . Bottom of stone is naturally flat with a quarter inch (.63cm) max ridge on underside below peak.
(Front)
(Back)
A hard, weather and water-worn Chinese Scholar Stone found in the decorative rocks in the yard of my parents' old home, northwest Phoenix, AZ, c. mid-1990s. Stone is 3-3/4"W x 5"H x 2"D (9.5cmW x 12.7cmH x 5.1cmD). There are eight holes which go through from front to back. Base was my first attempt a couple of years ago, carved out of a piece of discarded pine lumber, à la Lowe's. Indentation of about a half inch (1.27cm) made into the base to stabilize the stone. A wider base didn't seem to visually work -- comments?
Thanks,
Robert
